This joins two rhymes. The first is the 'went down town' nickel–pickle chain (see Gordon Brown), which is undated. The second is 'On the mountain stands a lady', a singing game: Douglas recorded a London 'lady on a mountain' rhyme in 1916 (in different words), and the Irish Schools' Collection has it as a ring game from the 1930s. The 'Lady, lady, turn right round' ending is the 1916 skipping formula.
