What the skipping CPD day covers

9:00 to 3:00, planned with you. Most days follow these four parts. Lee teaches Parts 1 and 2, and Scott teaches Parts 3 and 4.

Part 1Skipping skills, Double Dutch and long rope, hands onLed by Lee. Everyone picks up a rope. From the basic bounce to crosses and side swings, partner skipping, long rope games and Double Dutch turning and entry. See every skill. No experience needed: we start where your staff are.
Part 2How to teach skipping to a whole classLed by Lee. The teaching points and common faults for each skill, the progressions that get a whole class there, setting out a hall of thirty, keeping everyone moving, adapting skills for pupils with SEND, and rhymes and games for playtime. Young leaders join this part, so staff practise teaching real pupils.
Part 3Running the Skipping AwardsLed by Scott. What each colour of the Skipping Awards asks for, how to watch a skill with control on two different days, the class trackers, printing certificates and when to give reward ropes. Staff practise assessing on each other.
Part 4Getting every school onlineLed by Scott. Every school registers and logs on to skip-hop and the Virtual Skipping League, with its All-Access Skip Pass open. Then how to drill down to the coaching and video for any skill, find and teach a lesson from the scheme of work on the board, and run an assessment. Then the free Virtual Skipping League, step by step: below.

Part 4 in detail

The free Virtual Skipping League, step by step

The league is free for every school, and the schools that get the most from it are the ones whose staff know everything it can do. On the day Scott works with each school’s staff until they are registered, logged on and have their classes added, so they leave with the first round planned.

Why a staff training day, not a one-off skipping workshop

For a quarter of a century skip-hop ran skipping workshops in UK schools. The children loved them, but a workshop lasts a day, and once the coach has gone the skipping often goes too.

A training day turns that round. Your own staff learn the skills, how to teach them and how to run the Skipping Awards, so skipping carries on in PE lessons, at playtime and in clubs, with every class, long after we have left. If you were looking for a skipping workshop for your pupils, this is what we offer instead.

Your skipping coaches

A quarter of a century teaching skipping in UK schools, and the people who wrote the Skipping Awards, the scheme of work and the coaching on this site.

Lee Collinson-James, skip-hop founder and lead coach
Lee Collinson-JamesFounder and lead coach

Lee teaches Parts 1 and 2: the skills, hands on, and how to teach them to a whole class.

Lee has taught skipping in UK schools for more than 25 years, in primary schools in nearly every part of the country, and has trained skip-hop’s coaches and many teachers along the way. He has also worked extensively in special schools and secure units, which is where our approach of adapting every skill to every child comes from. The coaching notes for every skill on this site are his.

Scott Robert-Shaw, skip-hop founder and digital lead
Scott Robert-ShawFounder and digital lead

Scott teaches Parts 3 and 4: how to run the Skipping Awards, and the online side. He works with your staff until every school is registered and logged on to skip-hop and the Virtual Skipping League, has the All-Access Skip Pass open, and knows how to drill down to the coaching and video for any skill.

Scott looks after the digital side of skip-hop. He builds the tools that put Lee’s 25 years of coaching in the hands of primary teachers, School Games Organisers and Active Partnerships, so they can promote, teach and track skipping in their schools.

As you know we also hosted the teacher training morning in which we had 24 teachers and coaches and again they were so positive when they left and highly enthusiastic about incorporating skip-hop into playtimes, afterschool and curriculum! … your company have already got a fantastic name with us on the Isle of Wight.
Carol, Extended Services Officer, Carisbrooke Central Cluster, Isle of Wight
Just wanted to say a big thank you for yesterday, everyone really enjoyed the workshop. You got the delivery spot on with reference to impact on young people, benefits to schools and ensuring it was delivered at the right pace and fun for everyone. I haven’t laughed so much for ages - how sad!
Sue, Hurstmere School Sport Partnership
Before the workshop, a lot of my staff were unsure of what the day would involve and some were probably thinking how could we fill a whole day with skipping! … every single member of staff were so impressed by the workshop and how much the children enjoyed it!
Daragh, Principal, Creevy National School, Donegal
We have held several skipping workshops in primary and secondary schools run by skip-hop. They are fantastic and I have had nothing but brilliant feedback from them. They can take large groups, they relate the activity to health and the curriculum, it’s fun, interactive and educational. I can’t recommend it enough.
Mandy, Partnership Development Manager, Hamble School Sport Partnership

Who is the day for?

Skipping CPD and INSET questions

How much does a training day cost?

£1,043 for a day for your own school, for up to 30 staff. Through an Active Partnership it is £265 per school, with at least 4 schools, for up to 30 staff in total. skip-hop is not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add.

Is travel included, and how far do you go?

We travel to schools across the UK. Travel is included within 50 miles of Dorking: the price already covers the drive there and back. Further than that, we add 43p a mile, there and back, for every mile beyond 50. The calculator on this page gives you an estimate, and we confirm the exact figure when we reply.

What are the times?

9:00 to 3:00, with a break for lunch. We bring every rope, so all you need is a hall and staff in trainers.

Can it be an INSET day?

Yes. It is a full day, 9:00 to 3:00, so it fits an INSET day. There are no pupils in school on an INSET day, so if you would like young leaders to join Part 2 and give staff real pupils to teach, choose a normal school day instead.

Does it count as CPD?

Yes. It is practical CPD in teaching PE: every member of staff takes part, learns how to teach skipping to a whole class and how to assess the Skipping Awards, and gets a free online follow-up half a term later. After the day every member of staff is emailed their own CPD certificate, made with the same certificate maker your school will use for pupils’ Skipping Awards.

Do staff need to be able to skip?

No. The day starts from the very beginning, and the point is to teach your staff how to teach skipping, not to turn them into performers. Comfortable clothes and trainers are all they need.

Who can come?

Up to 30 staff: PE leads, class teachers, teaching assistants and midday supervisors. Young leaders can join Part 2 at no charge, so staff practise teaching real pupils.

Who leads it?

Lee Collinson-James, a founder of skip-hop and its lead coach, teaches Parts 1 and 2: the skills, hands on, and how to teach them to a whole class. Scott Robert-Shaw, also a founder, teaches Parts 3 and 4: running the Skipping Awards, and getting every school online, so by the end of the day every school is registered and logged on to skip-hop and the Virtual Skipping League, with the All-Access Skip Pass open to its teachers. Between them they have taught skipping in UK schools for a quarter of a century and wrote the Skipping Awards, the scheme of work and the coaching on this site.

Can we pay with the PE and sport premium?

A training day is aimed squarely at the premium’s first key indicator: increasing the confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport. 2026–27 is the premium’s final year, and schools must spend it by 31 July 2027. Check the current conditions of grant on gov.uk before you commit spending.

Do schools need the All-Access Skip Pass?

No, but every school on a training day gets a year of it free, worth £149, along with the free Virtual Skipping League. After that, schools can carry on for £149 a year, or carry on with the free Virtual Skipping League and the free resources for registered schools.

What happens after the day?

Half a term later we meet your staff online for 30 minutes, free, to answer questions and help with anything that isn’t working. You can email us any time in between.

Does skip-hop still run skipping workshops for pupils?

No. We now train teachers instead, so that skipping keeps going in your school long after the day itself.
