Skipping in every year group, planned and assessed

The Skipping Awards give you one progression from Reception to Year 6. The scheme of work gives every teacher the lessons, and the class trackers show you who has passed. Add the free Virtual Skipping League for competition and your School Games Mark evidence.

  • “I can’t be in every class.”Teachers run the lessons from the board, with coaching for every skill, and you see the passes on the trackers.
  • “We need a progression that makes sense.”Every skill sits in one Award. The Awards loosely follow the year groups, and children move on whenever they’re ready.
  • “My staff aren’t confident teaching it.”A skip-hop training day shows them the skills, how to teach a whole class and how to assess the Awards.

How skipping helps your PE plan

Getting children moving is only the start. Here’s what the benefits of skipping mean for you.

It covers the curriculumAt Key Stage 1, pupils master jumping, balance, agility and co-ordination. At Key Stage 2, they build strength, technique, control and balance, and link skills into sequences and routines.
It adds up the active minutesShort bursts of skipping in PE, at playtime and in clubs all count towards the 30 active minutes in the school day.
It reaches the least activeEvery child works on their own next Award, so the pupils who never make a team still have something to achieve.
It gives you leaders and competitionYoung Leaders can turn long ropes and run the league timer. Class challenges give you intra-school competition all year.

From schools that worked with skip-hop

Dear Lee. What an amazing day - thank you. Our staff and children thoroughly enjoyed (the workshops) with you today, you were really inspirational and oh so positive! It was great to see some of our children who don’t yet see themselves as ‘sporty’ perform in front of the whole school.

Thanks Lee, The children (and teachers) had a great time, as usual. Yes - it is always great to see unlikely children rising to your challenges - if only they could do this every week.

The Skipping Awards

Every skill on skip-hop belongs to an Award, so the Awards are your progression map from Reception to Year 6.

Questions PE leads ask

How do the Skipping Awards fit with the PE curriculum?

The Awards build the jumping, co-ordination, balance and control that the national curriculum asks for at Key Stages 1 and 2, and the scheme of work’s four units are each planned towards their Awards.

How are the Awards assessed?

A pupil passes a skill when they show it with control on two different days. Teachers tick each skill on the class tracker, and pupils who pass go straight to a certificate.

Can Young Leaders help?

Yes. Older pupils can turn long ropes, demonstrate skills and run the Virtual Skipping League timer. A teacher approves any scores they send in.
