The skip-hop rope: UK-made skipping ropes for schools
Designed for teaching a whole class to skip. Designed, fabricated, made and assembled in the UK, and used in UK schools for nearly 15 years.
Plenty of school skipping ropes are cheap plastic that kinks, tangles and is too light to turn, and children spend the lesson fighting the rope. skip-hop’s coaches spent a quarter of a century teaching skipping to whole classes in UK schools, so we designed a rope for exactly that job.
Scott Robert-Shaw, one of skip-hop’s founders, designed the skip-hop rope for our school skipping workshops, and schools have been skipping with it for nearly 15 years.

Designed for a whole class
Teaching thirty children at once shows up every weakness in a rope. These are the things we got right.
- 1Cut to three lengths
2.1 m for Key Stage 1, 2.5 m for Key Stage 2 and 2.8 m for adults. Out of the bag, handed out, and the class is skipping. No lesson lost adjusting ropes.
- 2A tough 5 mm cord
Scuff-resistant and thick enough to hold a smooth arc, so it doesn’t kink or tangle like thin cord.
- 3The right weight
Enough weight to turn itself and to be felt, so children can time the jump, without hurting when it catches a foot.
- 4Low-friction stops in the handles
The cord spins freely inside grippy, shatterproof handles, so the rope turns fast from the wrist, not the shoulders.
- 5Built for playgrounds
School ropes are dropped, trodden on and skipped on playgrounds every day. Used properly, ours last for years.
From a Reception class to a boxing gym
The same rope, in three lengths, works for a four-year-old taking their first jumps and an adult training for fitness. It was designed for school workshops, and it works just as well for a boxer or anyone who skips to keep fit. See learn to skip as an adult.

Ropes that come with lessons

A rope on its own doesn’t teach anyone to skip. Hopkins, our animated coach, demonstrates the skills on our skill pages with a skip-hop rope, and the children in our videos are skipping with skip-hop ropes. So what your pupils see is exactly what they hold.

Questions people ask
Where are skip-hop skipping ropes made?
In the UK. The skip-hop rope is designed, fabricated, made and assembled in the UK.
Who designed the skip-hop rope?
Scott Robert-Shaw, one of skip-hop’s founders, designed it for the skipping workshops skip-hop ran in UK schools. Schools have been using it for nearly 15 years.
What sizes do skip-hop ropes come in?
Speed ropes in 2.1 m for Reception to Year 2, 2.5 m for Years 3 to 6 and 2.8 m for adults and tall pupils, sold in packs of 10. There are also 7.5 m long ropes, pairs of 4.5 m Double Dutch ropes, beaded Double Dutch ropes and a children’s beaded rope.
Are skip-hop ropes adjustable?
The school ropes are cut to a fixed length for each key stage, so a class can start skipping straight away. A rope that is a little long can have a loose knot tied a little way below each handle.
Can adults use skip-hop ropes?
Yes. The 2.8 m rope suits most adults up to about 1.83 m (6′). It was designed for school workshops, and it works just as well for a boxer or anyone skipping for fitness.
How long do skip-hop ropes last?
Used properly, they last for years. Store them straight in a kit bag, skip on smooth surfaces and untie any knots before they are put away.
Do skip-hop ropes come with lessons?
The bigger sets do. The primary school set comes with 6 months of the All-Access Skip Pass, and the club set with a year. Every school, whatever ropes it uses, can use the skill pages, the long rope games, the rhymes and the free Virtual Skipping League, and registering your school free adds lesson tasters and 10% off.
